The first rule for me when composing is...
"Does it sound good?"
Or in the very least like I want it to sound. Other than that, I generally don't pay too much mind to style or genre.

This is what I meant when mentioning they way you interact with music affect the way you think. You are an example of someone who's open to music, and being open minded. It's a very simple analogy. :)
Thanks dude.

Some people are terrified to go out of their comfort zones in terms of genres, but I have started to embrace this fear a little. People like to develop skills in specific genres because they progress faster in producing songs of the genre; the key word is produce. It doesn't always inspire you when you 'produce' a piece based on your experience/knowledge alone.
I am not saying everyone can just love making all genres, because that is near impossible. But there are definitely amazing pieces from all genres out there (that most people can appreciate regardless of genre).

Flexibility versus accessibility. Most people like to pick one, and forget that both intertwined. They are not much different. Learning a single genre may seem fast, but in long run it actually slows down your ability to express your skill and most problematic of all, your creativity.
Not to boast, using myself as an example. The time I wrote drum and bass was 1/100 the time I spent to learn music. Yet in unimaginably short time, I could turn a single genre into a fusion of many many styles and sounds. I was able to find my own unique voice, even in super generic genre like DnB. That's what I meant by opening mind.
It's like going to a buffet. Most choose to have beef steaks. But there are many other foods that equally delicious. And most important of all, you can mix them. Just like music.
But thank you for your response!
