I've been giving away everything for 11 years with essentially this philosophy. I don't intend to alter this anytime soon.
Why not do both? So long as it doesn't destroy your motivation and enjoyment, sell your shit. If you feel pressed to finish and you hate commissions, just post it to YT or whatever, get passive income and feed it back into your hobby. Starving artist-ism isn't your only option, nor is it anything to be strived for. Balance in all things. Just have fun and do your thing, fuck what anyone tells you is their idea of success and do what's right for you. :)
